Re: alternatives, I'll look into OpenMediavault. Was hoping for more of a pre-built solution like Synology. I'm unsure if QNAP or other competitors support 32K NFS and fare better overall. Synology has a great reputation, but their forums are useless. In other words, the opposite of Mede8er's forum

Also looking into Windows 8 (or Windows Server 2012) and Storage Spaces, but reading about lots of issues with failed drives and difficulty restoring, not to mention slow read/write speeds.
For now, I decided to leave my 3D BD rips on my Synology for protection, but play back via an internal hard drive in the 1000X3D instead.
